How many songs did Saigal sing ?

Late Mr Hem Jain, a classic film music 'Collector' in his own right who mentored this Site and who had contributed a number of rare Saigal songs featured on this page, wrote :

The Saigal site must be, as you said, "thoroughly comprehensive and complete". There can not be two opinions about it. The target of placing all songs known to have been sung by Saigal is not at all ‘Difficult’.

There are 185 known songs and there is almost negligible chance of any other 'To be Discovered Song'; if at all it will be the 'mukhda’ of the song, at the most full lyric of  it, but almost never a ‘LIVE’ song.

The break-up of these 185 songs is 110 Hindi Film songs, 37 Hindi Non-film songs, 30 Bangla Film songs 2 Bangla non-film songs and 2 each of Pujabi, Pharsi, and Tamil.

Break-up of 185 Songs :

You must be right about his having sung more Punjabi songs (and for that matter Hindi and Bangla also) but the discovery of a live song is not possible in the absence of private recording facility, in his time. All his recordings available are either Gramophone Studio recordings or film soundtrack recordings.

Out of these 185 songs 170 are available ‘LIVE’. They have been heard and therefore their duration in ‘seconds’ is known. The remaining 15 songs are on the soundtracks of those movies of which film prints seem to have been lost or destroyed. These 15 songs have not been heard so the duration is not known but the full lyrics are available from the Production Booklets.

The break-up of these 15 songs is : 4 Hindi film songs belonging to :

- BhaktaSoordas1942 (1)

And 11 Bangla film songs belonging to :

The existence of film prints of the later 3 Bangla movies is possible somewhere, like the Bangla Devdas film print which was found in Bangladesh several years back.
