Sing-alike :

Ajit Singh

Ajit Singh opens his furniture shop in Delhi's Krishna Market at eight every morning. For the next one hour he nurtures, not his business, but his passion-Kundan Lal Saigal, the actor-singer who immortalised Devdas long before Shah Rukh Khan was born.

"I was 10 when I first heard Saigal's Babul Mora and was fascinated," says Ajit, 82, who sings Saigal songs every morning. "I would go to the nearby park at night to sing because my father did not let me learn music. I started singing bhajans and have been singing in the Rashtrapati Bhavan since 1991."

"K.L. Saigal", a musical play written and directed by the husband and wife team of M. Sayeed Alam and Niti Sayeed, presented by Pierrot's Troupe at Sri Ram Centre.

Uday Chandra was cast in the role of Saigal. Dr. Sayeed Alam in his search for some one who could train Uday Chandra in Saigal's gayaki discovered Sardar Ajit Singh. He agreed to train Uday Chandra for more than three months for four-five hours every day.

Uday Chandra brought alive the spirit of K.L. Saigal in the play. Ajit Singh was invited on the stage and the house gave him a standing ovation.
