Saigal Sing-Alikes : Rajendra Jhaveri, Founder grooms budding artistes through 'Sath Mein Gaaye', a sing-together group Viloma Jhaveri, Namita Parikh, Pooja Kothari & Tanvi Gandhi
Saigal may belong to the pre-Independence era, but he has a fan following in the GenY as well. Viloma Jhaveri started singing at five, and in three years has mastered 25 of Saigal's songs. The class 3 student of New Activity High School, Mumbai, is a member of 'Sath Mein Gaaye', a sing-together group that meets every Saturday at founder Rajendra Jhaveri's Chowpatty residence in Mumbai. Other young Saigal enthusiasts who never miss a session are Namita Parikh of class 10, Pooja Kothari of class 8, of Queen Mary's School, Mumbai, and 23-year-old management graduate Tanvi Gandhi. For Jhaveri, a 58-year-old diamond merchant, Saigal is a faint childhood memory through songs aired on AIR and Radio Ceylon. Though many of these fans have seen very few of Saigal's on-screen performances, his soulful voice pulls at their heart strings. Viloma prefers Saigal to MTV, says her mother Krushma. "I like the melody in Saigal numbers and feel happy when I sing them," says Viloma. Jhaveri's group has held six public programmes "to packed houses" in the last three years and has a large collection of Saigal's music on cassettes and CDs. "You cannot imagine the effect of nearly a thousand people singing Saigal songs together," says Jhaveri. Viloma Jhaveri, has recorded and released an album of Gujarati Jain stavans (bhajans) titled Prabhu Sameepe in 2003. - News Courtesy: screenindia.com Courtesy : "Saigal fans celebrate the singing superstar, and his birth centenary" ------------------------------------------ Please let us know of more such individuals and organisations
